Do you check the plumber’s taps before you hire them?
There is a saying in the trade: “The plumber always has a leaky tap.” Not because they don’t know how to fix it, but because they’re too busy fixing everyone else’s.
It’s a phrase we’ve been thinking about a lot recently.
Last week, while in talks with a potential new social media client, we were asked about the performance of our own channels. Fair question. But if we’re honest? The stats aren’t great.
We know we should be more active on our own social. We know what we’d recommend if we were our own client. But, just like that plumber with the leaky tap, we’ve been too focused on delivering results for our clients to spend time on our own.
When people come to us, it’s often because they don’t have the time, the resources, or the headspace to run their social properly. That’s exactly the gap we fill. And ironically, it’s the same gap we fall into ourselves.
Yes, we post now and then. But only when we can squeeze it in. (You’re more likely to find us here on Linkedin as that’s where our audience is.)
So when you’re looking for a plumber, do you go round their house and inspect their taps before you book them? Probably not. You look at how well they’ve solved other people’s plumbing problems.
It’s something we remind ourselves of often. And it’s something we’re working on, because yes, even the plumber deserves good plumbing.
